Throughout a large portion of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress forged from the memories of Vecna. Their mission for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" has them experience a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a discovery that may just hold the means to overcome him once and for all.

After locating Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. The play reveals the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a warship into a realm dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is known about his research, the container would assuredly have vials of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would genetically impart to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The stage play explains that Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he battles the influence of a dark entity, much like how Will was possessed by the entity in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear associated with the mine highlights how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a showdown between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to become stronger.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the endgame conflict to come.
