Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

Venus had previously revealed in November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open noted that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to go back to a venue that has meant so much to my career."

By the Numbers

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. This year will represent the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Setting a New Record

Officials pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.

In the final days of December, Williams married Danish-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
