We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like standard biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.
An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.
The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The entire film is a methodically building of scares, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
Both characters confront the sort of issues that come with long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
