The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent Through The Academy
This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the side.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during pre-season.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his debut.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.
The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be astonished to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
He has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine chose Spain, Diaz opted to play for the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to help the club chase trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
