The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a young woman containing several personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, while other scenes depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The central mechanic involves controlling the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms where their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

After a player believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
