Shoaib Bashir Earns Surprise Inclusion in England's Test Series Team
The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just two days before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected place.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the first Test to determine whether the venue pitch suit four seamers or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the selected group, indicating there are no doubts about either fast bowler's condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter most likely to be omitted if the spinner makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged several past matches.
In those games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
On a ground renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to offer some slow bowling while also bolstering the batting lineup.
However the coach has chosen to stick with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s best spinner.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” he said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
