NY Unveils Reporting Tool for Public to Report ICE Videos After Arrests of 4 US Citizens
New York state attorney general has introduced a recent digital platform encouraging locals to submit images and footage of ICE operations throughout the state. This action follows a day after a significant enforcement action disrupted Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering mass demonstrations.
American Citizens Arrested During ICE Operation
A lawmaker announced during a Wednesday press conference that four American citizens were taken into custody and kept for "almost a full day" after Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations broke out in New York on consecutive evenings.
"Every New Yorker deserves to live without fear," state officials stated in a release.
"For those who saw and recorded ICE activity yesterday, I ask you to provide that footage with the authorities. We are pledged to reviewing these reports and determining any violations of law."
Form Details
The portal offers spaces to send images and video footage of the operation, plus a area to specify where it occurred. Prior to sending, individuals must check a checkbox that acknowledges that "the office might employ any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, including in a lawsuit or public report."
Details of the Manhattan Operation
The enforcement action, which observers say involved dozens of federal agents, happened in a famous area of the city where imitation products and additional items are sold daily en masse – frequently to tourists.
Recordings of Tuesday's raid depict several masked and armed personnel zip-tying and detaining a person, and forcing aside onlookers. Crowds of New Yorkers trailed the officers along the roads. An armored military vehicle was also seen rolling through the city streets.
Political Response
During a news conference featuring the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a lawmaker, said that four nationals were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be taken for unjustly." He noted the persons were released on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," he remarked. "This constitutes a military-style operation to create conflict. It is merely a justification to incite violence for federal officials to utilize the troops to prevent conflict that they themselves caused."
Widespread Condemnation
Fury over the immigration operation rapidly grew – every mayoral candidates condemned the operation, including NY's governor.
"Once again, the federal government opts for authoritarian theatrics that create fear, instead of protection. It needs to cease," a political candidate stated.
NYC advocacy organizations spoke out also.
"Federal officers descended on the neighborhood with tactical trucks, masked agents and tactical gear to go after local sellers working to survive. This action had no relation to community security and everything to do with frightening communities and areas," remarked the president of a major immigrant coalition.
Official Guidelines
Agency rules prohibits the detention of US citizens and the bureau has stated it will not apprehend citizens. However, external research has revealed that more than 170 American nationals have been detained unlawfully by federal agents during the period of the existing leadership.
Current Situation
ICE raids have been becoming more common in the state and around the country lately.
A recent action in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the present government. Protests targeting immigration enforcement are ubiquitous along with accusations of violence and abusive practices.
Most recently, a document submitted by legal entities alleged medical neglect of women with child in government custody.
