International Bodies and the UK Decry a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Publisher Jimmy Lai’s 20-Year Jail Sentence.

The sentencing of pro-democracy activist and British citizen Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has elicited global rebuke. Human rights organizations and several nations have labeled the legal verdicts influenced by political considerations.

Global Condemnation and Demands for Freedom

Britain's top diplomat Yvette Cooper stated that the 20-year term constitutes a de facto life term for the elderly man. She characterized the prosecution as politically motivated pursuant to legislation aimed at quieting Beijing's detractors. The Foreign Secretary demanded Hong Kong's authorities to terminate his suffering and release him to his family.

“This outcome illustrates how the vague and overly broad stipulations of Hong Kong’s security law may be enforced in breach of international human rights obligations,” said the UN rights chief Volker Türk.

A representative for the European Union, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “condemns” the conclusion of the judicial process and demanded his prompt and absolute freedom.

Context of the Prosecution

Jimmy Lai, the force that established the now-shuttered pro-democracy newspaper, was detained following the introduction of a sweeping legal statute in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities following extended demonstrations which Lai and his newspaper supported.

He was found guilty on allegations encompassing plotting to create inflammatory publications and colluding with overseas entities. The collusion allegations were based on the national security statute.

Family Concerns

The activist's child, Sebastien, conveyed that his father fears dying alone apart from his relatives. His international counsel labeled him the “world’s highest profile prisoner of conscience” currently incarcerated.

Sebastien Lai noted that while the outcome was foreseen, its confirmation was more painful than imagined, though it brought some “relief” that the legal proceedings had concluded.

Political Repercussions

This ruling has cast a shadow over diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer reportedly raised Lai’s case during a meeting with President Xi Jinping earlier this year. Nevertheless, any potential progress in securing his freedom remains unclear.

Sebastien Lai questioned the value of enhanced diplomatic ties announced recently, saying it felt “rather incongruous.”

Authorities' Statements

In contrast, the governments in Hong Kong and Beijing applauded the court's decision. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee said the ruling demonstrated that “law and order is maintained.”

The mouthpiece of China’s diplomatic corps, Lin Jian, described Lai as the “chief architect” behind the 2019-2020 demonstrations and stated the prosecution was “legitimate and lawful.” He called on foreign countries to avoid meddling in what he termed China's internal issues.

A Representative Verdict

Press rights groups called Lai as a symbol of eroding press liberties in Hong Kong. Their director general said it was a “somber occasion for those who value a liberty of the press.”

Given an almost 100% success rate in prosecuting charges under the security law, Lai’s harsh punishment is viewed as the most severe yet handed down under the security statute.
