Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a major family reunion. This latest installment marks the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a character you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Return for Fallon Favorites
It has been established that three distinct characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this new outing, despite dying in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Audiences should get ready for the return of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a dream come true, even if he is terrified about the public's reaction. The performer clearly remembers the exact moment he got the offer from the original writer.
"I recall the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he says. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a role that is infamous, for better or worse," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fans
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular franchise.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Theories and Excitement Run High
While many dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back persists. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a strange communal situation. The possibility of a meta-horror story, inspired by classic genre films, also exists.
Audiences will find out the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
