Gas Detonation Claims 3 Police Officers During Eviction Procedure in Northern Italy
Three police officers perished and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in Italy's north.
Sequence of Events
The detonation was triggered as officers and emergency crews entered the residence in the vicinity of the Verona region to enforce an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.
Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who fled following the incident was located not long after. All three have been transported to medical facility.
The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the area revealed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.
Financial Context
The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.
Mediators had been assigned to talk with the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents triggered the blast.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed the media.
“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he said.
Incendiary devices were also located at the property, the minister confirmed.
Impact Assessment
The wounded by the incident included eleven more officers of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.
Based on information from the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
He believed the explosion had happened on a level above the access point and stated to reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas canisters being activated”.
Neighbor Statements
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed Italian media, mentioning that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
