Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials expressed outrage after Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be detained and penalized "through capital punishment" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Message That Sparked the Controversy
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, features six Democratic congress members who previously served in defense or defense positions.
"Like us, you all made an pledge to defend and defend this national charter," the representatives affirmed in the brief video. "At present, the threats to our constitution aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject illegal orders, you can decline improper directives, you should refuse improper directives. No one has to execute orders that break the legal system or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Furious Response
The recorded statement appeared to trigger a angry reply from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he stated: "This constitutes really serious, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their comments cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives React
Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats released a joint declaration condemning the comments.
"Political violence has no position in the United States," they declared. "Representatives who were featured in the video all acted our nation with tremendous loyalty and distinction. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous threats of violence against elected officials, and urge GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in contact with security officials "to ensure the safety of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these radical online messages and retract his aggressive discourse before he causes harm," the declaration continued.
Representatives' Firm Response
The officials who participated in the video also issued a declaration.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and national security professionals who care for this nation and took an vow to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they declared. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we plan to honor it. No intimidation, pressure, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the president deems it punishable by death for us to restate the legal requirements," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their backs as they execute their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "Every American must join forces and condemn the president's demands for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Further Political Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's comments and posted on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is demanding the execution of public representatives."
He continued: "This is an clear THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."
The Conservative official justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", describing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of the government telling soldiers to ignore directives, I think that is unprecedented in US history."
The Republican leader also reportedly stated to media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of treason" but that "attorneys have to analyze the terminology and establish all that."
Administration Statement
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Is the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the representative stated. "We see active officials of the American legislature who coordinated to arrange a video message to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to ignore the president's proper directives."
She said: "The purity of our armed forces relies on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is violated, it can lead to casualties, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally encouraging."
