‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s journey from injury table to scoring with Athletic Bilbao
Whenhe first time Gorka Guruzeta played in English soil, an teenage appearing for the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at Wycombe’s stadium in the 2015 season, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he took the field in British turf, against the English side weeks after, he scored. Another occasion, against Manchester City soon after, indeed, he did it once more. Upon his comeback to the city to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in 2017, he did it once more. An excellent finish, as well. “Actually,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve netted.” Thus the club did their duty: he was replaced.
“I was furious,” the attacker says, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: I hadn’t yet signed my contract, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I recall seeing about Manchester United, the usual talk. It’s unclear the validity, but had they contacted me, I would have wanted to stay at the club. I feel lucky to be here.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At Lezama, Bilbao, the early training is ready to commence; post-session, the quick travel to the airport and a further journey to the UK, this time to play Newcastle in the UCL on midweek. Just saying those two words lights him up. It’s turning out to be a challenging campaign for the team, partially owing to the requirements of their participation. Beaten in added time in the local rivalry, they have secured just a single victory of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. But, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation about him.
In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat up the Nervión estuary accompanied by a huge crowd after lifting the trophy, the first title in four decades. He’s now the club’s leading marksman in the European competition, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.
He considered it difficult enough just to earn a spot and he was right. Born to the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the opposition side, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that nurtured Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. He signed for Athletic at seventeen but after making his senior debut in that summer, he suffered a torn cruciate, dropped, a demotion and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of the club’s history.
“Entering the youth system doubting you’ll make the senior squad but each step you go through you’re still there and you can notice the proximity. You get there but … you have to leave.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in half a dozen appearances between his bow and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and I tear my cruciate.
“A massive setback but I look back on it as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the perspective. Healing from a serious ailment is challenging, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits new to you. Previously I was casual, but I did the sessions and then go home, as a youngster does. At the complex, facilities are comprehensive, so do everything. Training, prehab. Hit the weights. With hip imbalance, address that. If your ankles are a 10, make it a 12 or a 14. All the minor details: do them.
“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact countless occasions. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but additional work remains. Teammates are set, really ready; you have to be too.”
Minutes are crucial. He left upset in 2020, in his early twenties, joining the second tier. With Sabadell in that season, he got three strikes in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. If you turn it round, dedication, confidence, and if one day they need someone for your role, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. When they decided to call again, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, compete continentally, and make the UCL … pfff.”
No wonder he says this is to be enjoyed. Particularly after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was involved suffering. Previously the main threat with 16 in 2023-24, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
